This launch is also an important stepping stone for fulfilling the MHRD and AICTE’s goal of 1 crore successful internships by the year 2025. Instead of approaching education as ‘ doing by learning,’ our society needs to reimagine education as ‘ learning by doing.’ General education may not reflect the depth of productive knowledge present in society. India has a substantial pool of technical graduates for whom exposure to real-world project implementation and planning is essential for professional development. Such a programme will help reap the benefits of India’s demographic dividend as it is poised to have the largest working-age population in the world in the coming years. The finance minister announced the programme as part of the Budget 2020-21, under the theme ‘Aspirational India’, with the objective providing “internship opportunities to fresh engineers for a period of up to one year.” In addition, the programme will contribute to the Government’s endeavours to boost community partnership and government-academia-industry-civil society linkages. ![]() This will not only catalyse creation of prospective city managers, but also talented private/ non-government sector professionals. Not only will this help interns get hands-on experience in the activities of ULBs, but also help create a pool of resources from which the industry can draw talent in the time of need, in diverse fields, including urban planning, transport engineering, environment, municipal finance and so on. 25,000 fresh graduates are expected to benefit from the internship in the first year itself.
